The 64th running of the Daytona 500 has arrived, signaling the coming of Spring and NASCAR Championship racing. This year the Championship Cup Series has some changes, essentially giving the drivers, and their crew, less autonomy with the cars. The racecars are considered to be “more off the factory line”, rather than specifically tailored to the driver. Some drivers were able to test the new cars at the LA Memorial Coliseum but now the entire contingent of drivers will be experiencing these Next Gen machines in live action.

These new cars are not favored by the drivers, as Kyle Busch stated “There’s a lot more restraints to what we’re allowed to do. There are a lot of rules.” This sentiment was also shared by David Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development, noting “We could see ourselves still trying to wrap our heads around this by the time we get to midseason.” Whichever crew can dial their car in the fastest will have a significant advantage that could cross into future races.

At least the weather Sunday will be perfect for racing. It is expected to be sunny and in the mid 70’s. With these notable changes drivers are expecting a learning curve to how, and what, they can do with these cars. Look for these drivers to test what the new cars can do. NSPN will be bringing you coverage throughout the weekend, so please stay tuned.
